Privacy Policy For Information Outpost

Information Outpost takes your privacy seriously. Please read the following information about what information we gather and how we use it. If you have any questions about this policy please contact us at: matt @informationoutpost.com (remove the space from the email address).

Information Collected

Information Outpost collects ANY information you submit at our site. This includes all items on the personal survey as well as all questions submitted. We have specifically made our survey questions fairly vague and the only personal information that you are required to submit is your email address. Please do not submit any information you feel uncomfortable about providing to us. If you do not want to supply an email address, you can sign up for a free account at one of many sites like Yahoo.com and Hotmail.com and use that email for any interaction with our site.

Information Outpost also has various advertisers that may collect information about your use of our site. Our advertisers may use cookies or other methods to keep track of the number of times an ad is displayed and which ones are clicked on and what resulting purchases are made. Information Outpost is currently able to monitor how many times an ad is shown and how often it is clicked on. We also have visibility to what items where purchased on what dates. This information drives our commission payments for affiliates that pay us a percentage of their sales we generate. Information Outpost does not have the ability to determine who bought a specific item except possibly in the case of specific book ads. For the book ads, we are notified which book ads were clicked on and which books were purchased. So if a book was provided as part of an answer to a single question, we could assume that the person who submitted the question bought the book although it is possible that someone else viewed the answer and bought the book.

Information Outpost maintains a database of all the questions that have been submitted to the web site. The questions and answers developed by our staff will be made available to the general public to search through and view. We do not display the email address or name of the person submitting the question UNLESS THEY INCLUDE THIS INFORMATION IN THE BODY OF THE QUESTION. In addition, when answering questions, our staff is able to see the previous questions submitted by the user as well as any survey data that has been submitted.

Our web hosting company also provides an array of information on our web site visitors. We are able to determine general information about our users including their location, browser type, IP address, length of time visiting the site, pages viewed, entry point, exit point, search engine referral and search terms used to find the site. This information is presented in generic forms along the lines of the top IP addresses , top referring search engines, top keywords used, etc. and is not correlated to specific individuals using our web site.

How We Use the Information

Information Outpost uses the information gathered at our web site in four ways:

  1. We use your demographics, and question history to enable us to give you a better answer to your questions. If you live in the UK and are looking for legal advice, sites related to U.S. law are not useful to you.
  2. We use your demographics, question history, and generic ad success information to best provide ads that you may be interested in.
  3. We use our web site demographic information and ad response rates to determine the best selection of affiliate programs and specific banner ads to use on our site. Our current demographics indicate that over 25% of our visitors are from outside the United States, so we are trying to add more affiliate programs that would be relevant to the non-U.S. customers and more profitable for us.
  4. We use your email address to notify you when we have completed an answer. We also will use your email to send you a monthly newsletter if you have specifically stated that you are willing to receive this information in our personal survey. At any time, you can notify us that you do not want to receive the newsletter and we will remove you from our list.

Information Outpost does not intend to sell any customer information or email addresses. However, there is a chance that our company may be purchased by another company or may go out of business. In these cases, the purchasing company or companies we have debts with may opt to sell our email addresses to help pay off our debt, but recent court cases have indicated that this is an unlikely scenario.

There is also a slight chance that hackers could access our database of information. We currently take every reasonable precaution to avoid such attacks, but they still are a possibility. The bottom line is do not provide any information to us (or any other Internet site) that you do not want potentially available to anyone in the world.

Credit Cards

Information Outpost does not process credit cards for purchasing our services. We use PayPal, an outside vendor to process all our credit card transactions. Please consult PayPal's privacy policy regarding information you provide them during credit card transactions intitated at Information Outpost. Our affiliates may also require your credit card information and you should only provide it if you feel comfortable doing so. Some basic advice on submitting a credit card is to learn the security features of your browser and make sure you have a secure connection (usually indicated by a solid key or closed padlock icon) when you send your information. Also check to see what your credit card policies are for Internet fraud. If you need more information on security precautions, send us a question and we will find some good reference sites for you.

Links to Other Sites

Information Outpost provides links to almost every imaginable web site. Each site is responsible for their privacy policy and we are in no way responsible for their privacy practices or their content.

A Note on Cookies

Cookies are bundles of information that is transferred to your computer's hard drive through your Web browser. Information Outpost uses cookies in order to customize our web site for each visitor. Use of cookies is not required for our services, but enabling them will allow us to make our site easier for you to use. If you want to disable the cookie function on your computer, check with the "help" section of your browser. It should tell you how to prevent your browser from accepting new cookies, how to have the browser notify you when you receive a new cookie.
